Review of the Galaxy Book 5 Pro: A stylish ultrabook designed for efficiency

Convenience is the main goal of technology. We’ve gone a long way from carrying around heavy, boxy computers from the late 2000s. When Apple released the ultra-light and high-end MacBook Air in 2008, it revolutionized design. Since then, innovation companies have been working to strike the ideal balance between performance and mobility. Samsung has a history of producing beautifully designed and highly efficient computers.

At CES 2025 this year, the South Korean electronics powerhouse debuted the brand-new Galaxy Book 5 Pro. The newest model in the company’s range of high-end laptops is the Galaxy Book 5 Pro. Although there isn’t a significant change from the previous models’ design scheme, the most recent model appears to be lighter and more attractive and achieves a number of performance standards.

First impressions

There are two sizes available for the Galaxy Book 5 Pro: 14-inch and 16-inch. For this review, I have the smaller model. A 65W charger and a C-to-C cable are included in the stylish packaging so you can charge the device while you’re on travels. The brushed metal surface is what one would notice initially when opening the package. I was also impressed by the aluminum chassis because I dislike surfaces that are prone to fingerprints. Because of its tiny appearance, the Book 5 Pro is perfect for portability.

The gadget has outstanding durability and weights around 1.5 kg. The Galaxy Book 5 Pro has the normal hinge, which prevents it from folding all the way back, unlike the 360 variant. In any case, its small and agile form factor makes it easy to find a pleasant view, even in confined areas. The thin laptop has one USB-A 3.2 connector, microSD card slot, and headphone jack on the right side, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports and HDMI 2.1 on the left.

Specs about the Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro

The Intel Core Ultra Series 2 CPU, sometimes referred to as Lunar Lake, is a power-efficient component of the Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro. This device uses relatively little power and provides fast desktop performance.

Although Lunar Lake’s battery life and integrated graphics performance are impressive when compared to other laptops, its eight-core structure isn’t tuned to provide high-end CPU performance in multithreaded applications.

The Samsung review model that we were given includes a 1 TB SSD, 16 GB of RAM, and retails for $1,649. Additionally, Samsung sells a $1,449 configuration with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD and a $1,749 option with 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

Design and build quality

The ideal replication of the Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 is the Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro. This large 16-inch gray metal wedge with black keys and a black bezel surrounding the screen.

The design is basic, just in a pleasant way. There aren’t many accessories; Samsung lets the large, stunning screen speak for itself.

With all that metal, it’s also really sturdy. You can simply pick it up and hold it from anywhere on the base because it weighs less than three and a half pounds. For a 16-inch laptop, it is remarkably light and portable at 3.44 pounds.

It is simple to open and close with one hand thanks to the hinge’s good performance. The main difference with the Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 is that hinge. The hinge on this laptop only opens to roughly 135 degrees, whereas the other machine has a 360-degree hinge and a 2-in-1 design.

Trackpad and keyboard

A full-size keyboard with a conventional number pad on the right side is included with the Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro. It features an adjustable white backlight.

This chiclet keyboard seems comfortable enough to type on, just as the Galaxy Book5 Pro 360. It’s a decent size! However, the key travel seems a bit shallow; this is probably caused in part by the laptop’s thinness.

Although the laptop’s design and screen are very high-end, I don’t think this keyboard feels as high-end as, say, a ThinkPad keyboard.

The large trackpad I’ve become accustomed to seeing on Samsung Galaxy laptops is there on this device. The mouse pointer moves smoothly, and clicking feels satisfying. I was first put off by the size of the trackpad on the Samsung Galaxy laptops I tried, but I’m now growing to like it.

What’s the reason for not wanting the biggest trackpad beneath the keyboard? The trackpad is positioned intelligently so that it doesn’t obstruct typing. Palm rejection also performed well.
