Maybe I shouldn’t have been shocked to see someone skate-walking around the Huntington Place convention center in Detroit. Don’t get me wrong, Automate is hosting a lot of fascinating events today, but I just never thought that $1,400 worth of shoes could be possible.
For the record, the individual was Shift Robotics’ third employee and lead mechanical and design integration engineer, Abe Pleta. For now, at least, the company’s name belies its emphasis (who knows where future initiatives could lead them). The hundreds of robot arms that line the exhibition floor are a long cry from the product.
Moonwalker Shoes Take a Step into Warehouses as Shift Targets Enterprise Efficiency
The startup supposedly attended the event on behalf of the Pittsburgh consortium, which is really a small group of intriguing local businesses that also includes the drone inventory company Gather AI. However, there’s another intriguing aspect to the event: Shift has been focusing more on the corporate sector. It’s among those unforeseen possible market fits. Employees who work at warehouses walk a lot. People may be able to walk more intelligently rather than more forcefully using the company’s Moonwalker shoes.
After four years at Rolls-Royce, Xunjie Zhang returned to CMU to study mechatronics and created Shift in 2018. Pleta recalls, “He was constantly late and was trying to get to work.” “All right, I’ll get a scooter so I don’t have to search for parking spaces,” he thought. After that, I will be struck by a car. I have to go out on the sidewalk. It’s too slow to walk. How can we speed things up? That is where the concept originated.
Viral shoes set growth path
Following years of work on the Moonwalkers, the business last October launched a Kickstarter campaign. Even without a marketing crew, Shift was able to become a viral success, hitting its $95,000 target in less than two days. After then, things calmed down a little, but by the end of the campaign, the firm had managed to raise $329,000.
Apart from the inherent publicity, the crowdsourcing initiative enabled Shift to ascertain that there was, in fact, a demand for $1,400 semi-skating shoes. The business will be able to progressively lower that price as it grows and scales. According to Pleta, all supporters have received their Moonwalkers, and Shift is already completing post-Kickstarter orders. Now that crowdfunding is over, the business intends to raise a Series A this year.

Rolling Into the Future with Moonwalkers
Pleta led the way, so I tried out the Moonwalkers on the floor. In all, the shoes contain 10 wheels. A pair of nonmotorized wheels and four motorized two-wheel clusters are located up front. The reasoning behind the latter is because motorizing them might be dangerous because the ball of the foot is utilized to activate the wheels’ movement, much like roller skates or blades. Polyurethane is used to make the wheels themselves.
Pleta claims that through an email conversation, George Powell, the creator of Powell-Peralta Skateboards and a legend in the business, gave him a “crash course” on wheels. But that’s where he starts and stops working for the firm. Pleta asserts, “He’s not involved at all. I want to continue skateboarding,he stated. My universe is this.
Although there is enjoyment to be found, the Moonwalkers are mostly focused on movement. They can reach speeds of up to seven miles per hour, which is around 2.5 times faster than the average human walk. Pleta goes on to say that you can really pick up some speed on the airport’s moving walkway, approaching 12 mph. Additionally, they ought to have little trouble passing through airport security.
Despite their moniker, the Moonwalkers weigh four pounds. You have to get used to that. After the first day, your muscles will probably be a little sore. The drivetrains and battery are the main causes of the weight. According to Shift, you should be able to go six miles between charges, however there are a number of factors that affect this, such as inclination.

From Straps to Strides: Getting Used to Moonwalkers
It also takes some getting acclimated to the shoes themselves. You adjust the Velcro straps over your shoes, leaving them on. Until you pivot the right shoe’s heel and turn the white light on the side green, the wheels stay locked in place. From then, the process is quite similar to roller skating, with the shoes performing the majority of the labor-intensive work. At times, I found myself unintentionally halting them mid-ride, which rather betrayed me. Pleta claims that the algorithms, which will be accessible via a firmware OTA update, are continuously being improved.
I did, after all, skate down half an aisle of a convention hall and returned. I’m very certain that within another twenty to thirty minutes, I would have had a respectable command of the material.
For the organization, the workplace route will be an exciting one. I compared it to Magic Leap’s ongoing transition from $3,000 consumer headsets to business ones. Selling these items in quantity obviously yields a higher profit margin, but doing so requires navigating OSHA and other legal requirements.
Pleta explains, We’re working that out as we go. In our five years of growth, we have had no injuries to yet. As of now, none of our clients or backers have suffered any injuries.
